Pittcon Plenary Lecturer Tackles Public Health Challenges<br />

he intersection of two current developments made Pittcon’s Plenary<br />
Lecture by UCLA researcher Dr. Ziva Cooper especially timely and<br />
insightful on Tuesday. The American opioid crisis is among the most<br />
deadly public health challenges in U.S. history, while research on the use of<br />
cannabis to mitigate opioid effects is on the front burner of laboratories.<br />
Opioids are the primary factor in drug overdose fatalities. The Centers<br />
for Disease Control (CDC) reports that in one recent year, opioids were<br />
involved in more than 47,000 overdose deaths, or nearly 68 percent of all<br />
drug overdose deaths that year. Though the CDC reported a 5.1 percent<br />
drop in overdose deaths in 2019, 2.1 million Americans live with opioid<br />
