Legislative Update<br />
Dear Minnesota REALTORS®:<br />
The 2012 Legislature convened on January 24th and, after 250 calendar days, of which 119 were<br />
spent in active session, the 87th Minnesota Legislature adjourned for the year on May 10th.<br />
The 119 legislative days used by this Legislature is tied for second most in the history of the state.<br />
The length of the 2012 Session was somewhat surprising since the GOP Leadership began the<br />
session with the promise that it would be a “short” session and House leaders even distributed a<br />
calendar listing an adjournment date of April 30, 2012.<br />
A positive budget forecast released in early March meant the legislature and Governor would not<br />
have to negotiate a budget in 2012, which was the issue that ultimately led to a state government<br />
shut-down in 2011.<br />
With the budget in balance, lawmakers had three controversial and challenging issues on their<br />
