Legislative Update
Dear Minnesota REALTORS®:
The 2012 Legislature convened on January 24th and, after 250 calendar days, of which 119 were
spent in active session, the 87th Minnesota Legislature adjourned for the year on May 10th.
The 119 legislative days used by this Legislature is tied for second most in the history of the state.
The length of the 2012 Session was somewhat surprising since the GOP Leadership began the
session with the promise that it would be a “short” session and House leaders even distributed a
calendar listing an adjournment date of April 30, 2012.
A positive budget forecast released in early March meant the legislature and Governor would not
have to negotiate a budget in 2012, which was the issue that ultimately led to a state government
shut-down in 2011.
With the budget in balance, lawmakers had three controversial and challenging issues on their
age
