Light in the Treatment of Damaged and Aging Skin Last time, we discussed the positive effects of light and its ability to correct redness and pigmentation. We will now talk about adding an extra boost to the treatment and making the light much more effective and valuable in different ways. We can also use light to rejuvenate the skin and correct and prevent skin cancers caused by sunlight. The application of a chemical (ALA-aminolevulinic acid-Levulon) activated by an Intense Pulse Light (IPL) machine is called PDT (Photodynamic Therapy). PDT will reverse early skin cancers, rejuvenate aging skin, and even control acne. Levulon is converted by the IPL to a compound that is toxic to abnormal cells. A reactive oxygen species is produced which promotes tumor destruction. Since it actually destroys pre-cancerous cells, PDT treatments may actually prevent the formation of skin cancers.
