Bushels bring empowerment<br />
Thousands of acres of North American<br />
cropland are benefiting farmers and villag-<br />
ers in developing countries. But the help<br />
is not in the form of food for the hungry.<br />
Instead, thanks to the efforts of the Foods<br />
Resource Bank (FRB), harvested bushels<br />
are turned into cash, which funds ag devel-<br />
opment projects in more than 30 countries.<br />
Deere support. FRB works through<br />
local Community Growing Projects which<br />
pool resources and raise crops. Since 2007,<br />
for example, three churches near Hamilton,<br />
Michigan, have joined forces in a Commu-<br />
nity Growing Project. “The churches and<br />
some of their members donate land,” says<br />
