<br /> was abdominal pain. The pain complaints by site do not sum<br /> evenly to 100 percent because patients often described pain<br /> in multiple sites at the same time. Patients overwhelmingly<br /> requested intravenous (I.V.) hydromorphone (Dilaudid) at<br /> the majority of ED visits. One patient requested I.V. Dilaudid<br /> routinely for ear pain of no major pathology; another requested<br /> I.V. Dilaudid for, and was hospitalized for, extreme complaints<br /> of pain out of proportion for a routine diagnosis of a sore throat.<br /> The majority of patients suffered from a psychiatric comorbidity<br /> (predominantly anxiety/depression), and their primary request<br /> was usually for intravenous opiates.
