When Col. Ned Green made the first<br />
trip by a car in Texas – on the morning<br />
of Oct. 5, 1899 – Texas roads were quite<br />
different than they are today. They were<br />
rough and weren’t laid out with long-<br />
distance travel in mind. But that trip<br />
set the stage for the state’s preference<br />
for the car as our primary mode of<br />
transportation.<br />
Fast forward a century and Texans<br />
still prefer their cars, although they’ve<br />
changed since those first days of<br />
the colonel’s two-cylinder surrey. And<br />
today, they’re still changing, evolving<br />
into technological marvels that could<br />
one day drive themselves.<br />
