As I write this, Greenpeace has launched
our most ambitious campaign for a long
time – Save the Arctic. Actually, it’s about
saving ourselves as much as the polar
bear, because without the Arctic we
lose one of the most critical life support
systems for the planet. Right now, the
Arctic is warming and melting faster than
any other place on the planet. Instead of
seeing this as a warning, the willfully blind
oil giants see this as an opportunity to go
deeper into this precious region to drill for
more oil – the very stuff that has caused
the warming in the first place.
The Arctic, as well as the deep waters
off our coasts, are the new frontiers for
the old oil companies, and by their very
nature pose the biggest risks, financially,
technologically and ecologically.
