O pioid use and misuse is
having a serious effect on
the U.S. workforce. According
to a 2017 NSC employer survey,
more than seven in 10 employ-
ers are directly impacted by pre-
scription drug use or misuse by
their workforce. Nearly half (48
percent) identified a negative busi-
ness impact such as missed work,
lower productivity and increased
near-misses and occupational
injuries.
An employee with an opioid
use disorder misses three times as
much work as one who doesn’t—an
estimated 29 days a year—as noted
in the 2017 data analysis of the
Substance Abuse and Mental Health Service
