Historically, ammonium nitrate produces the highest yield and quality forage<br />
compared to other nitrogen fertilizers. The nitrate is immediately available for<br />
uptake by plant roots leading to a “quick green up”. The result is a higher yielding<br />
forage with a higher protein content and an increased return on investment.<br />
Greenhouse gas emissions for nitrogen fertilizer occur during manufacturing<br />
and from reactions in the soil. Of all the nitrogen fertilizers, nitrates are the<br />
most environmentally sound with low ammonia volatilization and leaching since<br />
grasses are highly efficient bioaccumulators of nutrients. Through innovative<br />
production technologies, Yara has further improved nitrates' environmental<br />
performance by reducing their carbon footprint by 29%.<br />
