Brain disorders that cause mental<br />
illnesses like schizophrenia, bipolar<br />
disorder, autism, ADHD and neurological<br />
disorders like epilepsy and dementia<br />
are responsible for huge burdens on<br />
individuals and society.<br />
To understand this group of conditions and<br />
to develop effective treatments are now the<br />
greatest challenges facing medical science.<br />
Recent advances in neuroscience and<br />
genetics have placed us for the first time<br />
in a powerful position to make progress.<br />
Yet these disorders continue to attract less<br />
attention than other medical illnesses and<br />
research remains grossly under-funded<br />
compared with other conditions such as<br />
cancer and cardiovascular disease. The<br />
challenge is to identify the right questions<br />
and to bring together scientists with the<br />
