Airway<br />

Perhaps the most fundamental<br />
principle in all of anesthesiology<br />
centers on the airway. The exchange<br />
of oxygen and carbon dioxide is<br />
fundamental to life; a patent airway is<br />
necessary for this exchange to occur.<br />
In current anesthetic practice there<br />
are myriad devices and techniques to<br />
ensure that the airway is patent. From<br />
end tidal carbon dioxide monitoring,<br />
to the most recent video laryngoscopes,<br />
much time and effort has been devoted<br />
by anesthesiologists and collaborators to<br />
protect patients undergoing anesthetics<br />
