Collective investment trusts and mutual funds:
Understanding the difference
As you review the investments available to you through Pathfinder, you
may have noticed that some investment options are known as collective
investment trusts (CITs).You may also have questions about how CITs
are different from other investment options such as mutual funds
(which are also available through the Plan). Here is a quick look at the
similarities and differences.
Mutual funds
A mutual fund is a type of investment that pools the money of multiple
investors to invest in a portfolio of stocks, bonds and/or other assets.
Mutual funds are regulated by the Securities and Exchange Commission
(SEC) and have investment managers who decide which assets to invest
in based on the fund’s investment objectives (which are spelled out in the
