History of the region<br />
The establishment of Frihavnen (the Copenhagen<br />
Free Port) was motivated by the German decision to<br />
construct a canal between Kiel and Elbe. The idea of<br />
the Kiel Canal was to connect Hamburg with the Baltic<br />
Sea, thus making Hamburg a serious competitor to<br />
Copenhagen when it came to facilitating the transit<br />
trade in the Baltic region. Therefore, the idea behind<br />
Frihavnen was to maintain the transit trade in parti<br />
cular in spite of the intensifying competition, since<br />
duties were not imposed on goods as long as they re<br />
