Message from the Executive Director
It’s July, that time of year that school children treasure and adults long to recapture: summer!
It also means two familiar constants in Texas: 100-degree temperatures and orange construction
cones aplenty.
Summer is our busy season, and while that’s a good thing, it also means that our workers on the
road must be extra cautious. I have my own experience and appreciation for just such caution.
During one of my summers between semesters at Texas A&M, I worked for a road construction
contractor out of Abilene. My job was to run stakes and pull up roots, collect wood, sticks,
anything large that was left by the grading and preparation of the road for materials and
eventual surfacing. We’d start work very early in the morning and work all day. By 2 p.m. or 3
