Message from the Executive Director<br />
It’s July, that time of year that school children treasure and adults long to recapture: summer!<br />
It also means two familiar constants in Texas: 100-degree temperatures and orange construction<br />
cones aplenty.<br />
Summer is our busy season, and while that’s a good thing, it also means that our workers on the<br />
road must be extra cautious. I have my own experience and appreciation for just such caution.<br />
During one of my summers between semesters at Texas A&M, I worked for a road construction<br />
contractor out of Abilene. My job was to run stakes and pull up roots, collect wood, sticks,<br />
anything large that was left by the grading and preparation of the road for materials and<br />
eventual surfacing. We’d start work very early in the morning and work all day. By 2 p.m. or 3<br />
