As a year of extreme weather events
in 2013 gave way to an early 2014
polar freeze of record low tempera-
tures in dairy regions throughout
the U.S., farmers and ranchers
showed their high levels of dedica-
tion to cattle care.
From feeding to milking to calving and
calf care, every activity brought new sets
of challenges during prolonged days of
extreme low temps. In fact, every season
brings its own set of challenges -- espe-
cially for cows and heifers transitioning
through calving into the milking herd.
If it’s not the winter cold and ice or the
springtime time mud, it’s the summer heat
to watch out for.
When Mother Nature dishes out her
worst, dairy farmers are at their best. “It
