SOUTHWEST PACIFIC THEATER
ABOUT THE COVER
The cover image features two aircraft assigned to the CAF Southern
California Wing. In this image, the A6M3 Zero is being chased by
the F6F Hellcat. The U.S. Navy’s Hellcat dominated the Zero in the
Pacific Theater. Most battles in the Pacific Theater conjure images
of Wildcats, Hellcats, and TBM Avengers. However, no Allied Naval
aircraft participated in the Battle of the Bismarck Sea. This major
victory was achieved by land-based aircraft using airpower to
devastate Japan’s warships.
