he Barbara Bates Center for the Study of the History of Nursing
is the largest repository for primary and secondary source mate-
rial on the history of nursing in the world. The Center holds an
extensive collection of materials from 19th to late 20th century hospital-
based nursing schools, visiting nurse societies, voluntary non-profit as-
sociations, professional groups, as well as the personal papers of nursing
leaders and practicing clinicians. In addition, the archives contain a col-
