About the cover:
The cover design of this publication features the Painted Lady butterfly (Vanessa cardui), a wide-ranging
species in Ontario with records from the Hudson Bay and James Bay coasts and south to Windsor. The cover
also includes the Eastern White Pine (Pinus strobus), Ontario’s official tree. Both species are enduring
symbols of our natural wealth and represent the diversity of Ontario’s species and ecosystems.
The colour wave represents the intricate relationship between our lives and the Earth that sustains us, with
the colours representing the sky, sun, earth, landcover, living organisms and water. The weaving together
of the colours also symbolizes the broad and diverse mandates of the ministries involved in Biodiversity:
It’s In Our Nature.
