Introduction
Paraoxysmal nocturnal hemoglobinuria (PNH) is a very rare blood
disorder in which chronic, uncontrolled activation of complement, a
component of the normal immune system, results in hemolysis; the
destruction of the patient's red blood cells. PNH has been identi ed as
occurring more commonly in patients with disorders of the bone marrow,
including aplastic anemia (AA) and myelodysplastic syndromes (MDS).1-3
SolirisĀ® (eculizumab), a terminal complement inhibitor, speci cally targets
uncontrolled complement activation, and extensive clinical trials have
indicated that SolirisĀ® signi cantly reduces hemolysis, which leads to an
improvement in symptoms and a reduction in major health problems
