The Second Most Common Neurological Disease
Diagnosed in Horses
Neuroaxonal Dystrophy/Equine
Degenerative Myeloencephalopathy
by Carrie J. Finno, DVM, DACVIM
N
euroaxonal dystrophy (NAD)
is a neurological disease in
which both the cell body of
the neurons and the axons throughout
the brain and spinal cord undergo
degeneration. Axons are the parts of the
nerve cells along which impulses travel,
so this condition results in abnormal
conduction of nervous impulses and
associated clinical signs defined by a
lack of coordination. The cause of this
degeneration is not understood at this
time.
