the Unknown
T
HERE WAS A TIME, NOT TOO MANY YEARS AGO,
when a college or university had a fairly clear-cut vision of its fi-
nancial picture. Tuition dollars could be counted on, expenditures
could be planned and paid for, fundraising goals could be realistically set
and met. To paraphrase former Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld's
somewhat convoluted remarks concerning the Iraq war a decade ago, there
were known knowns, and there were known unknowns. But today there
are also unknown unknowns—things we don't know that we don't know.
