fuels, saying that present policies<br />
mean that CO2 emissions are<br />
being subsidised to the tune of<br />
$100 per tonne.<br />
Speaking at the EWEA 2013<br />
conference in Vienna, Birol said<br />
that fossil-fuel subsidies rose<br />
to $523bn globally, dwarfing<br />
support for renewables of about<br />
$88bn, with only $21bn for<br />
wind.<br />
“For me, fossil-fuel subsidies<br />
are public enemy number one of<br />
sustainable energy development,”<br />
