A BIGGER AND BETTER MICHIGAN STADIUM<br />

Contrary to the belief of some, it was not my original<br />
intention to make any dramatic changes to the stadium.<br />
Why would we?<br />
But soon after I became athletic director in 2000, we<br />
hired consultants to assess the building and their report stat-<br />
ed the obvious: We had major problems with Michigan<br />
Stadium. It was functionally obsolete and it had numerous<br />
safety issues and convenience problems, such as long lines to<br />
enter, overcrowded aisles and concourses, inadequate dis-<br />
abled seating and too few bathrooms.<br />
The fact was, despite a lot of refurbishments over the years, the only major projects we had complet-<br />
ed at the stadium since the time of Fielding Yost were the addition of bench seats and porta-potties.<br />
Now, what to do about it all? We figured if we were going to open this up, we might as well get<br />
