Can you imagine living in a world where billfish
populations have been so diminished that fishing for
them is no longer worthwhile? Most billfish anglers
cannot, and the International Game Fish Association
(IGFA) shares this same sentiment. Billfish (e.g.,
marlin, sailfish and spearfish) represent some of the
most, if not the most, iconic big game, offshore
species. Recreational fishing for billfish also pro-
vides substantial economic benefits. In the Carib-
bean region alone, angler expenditures are as much
as $3.5 billion annually to pursue these fish. While
similar economic estimates are not readily available
in other regions, one can only imagine what the
global economic value is for recreational billfishing.
