Can you imagine living in a world where billfish<br />
populations have been so diminished that fishing for<br />
them is no longer worthwhile? Most billfish anglers<br />
cannot, and the International Game Fish Association<br />
(IGFA) shares this same sentiment. Billfish (e.g.,<br />
marlin, sailfish and spearfish) represent some of the<br />
most, if not the most, iconic big game, offshore<br />
species. Recreational fishing for billfish also pro-<br />
vides substantial economic benefits. In the Carib-<br />
bean region alone, angler expenditures are as much<br />
as $3.5 billion annually to pursue these fish. While<br />
similar economic estimates are not readily available<br />
in other regions, one can only imagine what the<br />
global economic value is for recreational billfishing.<br />
While billfish are extremely popular with anglers and gen-<br />
