The Sun stands by
`plebgate' claims

The Sun has stood by its Andrew Mitchell
`plebgate' story in its defence to the
former chief whip's £150,000 libel claim.
MP Mitchell is suing the newspaper for
a story last September claiming he had
called police officers outside Downing
Street “fucking plebs”.
The story eventually led to Mitchell
standing down as chief whip.
Mitchell is also seeking an injunction to
prevent The Sun from publishing further
material claimed to be defamatory.
He has denied the paper's “serious
and offensive” allegation, which he has
claimed was written in a way to present
him as “inexorably guilty”.
