Sometimes a new tool design is like an iceberg: there’s an awful lot more going on below<br />
the surface than you can see. The drawbore pins on the facing page are an excellent example<br />
of just that. After all, what could be more straightforward than making a pointed stick, but<br />
out of metal?<br />
Our first and most obvious step was to get the pin profile correct. Not only did we need a<br />
taper that would draw a joint together smoothly, it also had to leave no trace of rust or other<br />
oxide behind. That made stainless steel the clear choice for the material. So far, so good.<br />
The handle, however, presented a problem. You see, we know anything distinctly shaped<br />
like a large nail will eventually get struck by a hammer (even when we know we should use<br />
